What gutter work looks like on Charleston roofs.
Peninsula gutters have to move water off a steep roof into a street that may already be flooded. On Harleston Village and Eastside homes we run 6-inch seamless aluminum with oversized downspouts and route discharge away from the crawlspace, because on a king tide the storm drain is not taking anything.
Inside the Old and Historic District, half-round gutters in copper or a period-appropriate finish are the usual fit on South of Broad and Ansonborough homes, and we include the gutter profile in the BAR submission alongside the roof where it applies. Wagener Terrace and Hampton Park Terrace live oaks fill open gutters every spring, so micro-mesh guards are standard there.
On the peninsula the gutter job is often a fascia job. A century of Charleston humidity behind a failed gutter rots the fascia and the ends of the rafter tails on a Cannonborough or Eastside single house, and hanging a new gutter on soft wood buys a year. We open the edge, replace the rot, wrap or prime the fascia, and hang the gutter on solid material, priced as its own line so you see what the water actually cost.
Downspout discharge is a decision on the peninsula. A downspout that ends at the sidewalk on a Harleston Village lot runs water back under the house on a king tide; one tied into a drain that runs to the street backs up when the street floods. We route discharge to the highest point on the lot that drains, and on a South of Broad house with a garden, into a dry well or a drain line the landscaper installed, coordinated with the roof schedule.
1800s to early 1900s single houses and Charleston doubles with standing seam, slate and terne metal (South of Broad, Ansonborough, Harleston Village, Wraggborough, Cannonborough-Elliotborough); 1920s to 1940s bungalows and cottages with hip and gable roofs in Wagener Terrace and Hampton Park Terrace; 1940s to 1960s ranches and duplexes in North Central and the upper Eastside; steep pitches, dormers and piazza roofs throughout.

What is included in every Charleston job.
Asked in Charleston.
How much do gutters cost in Charleston?
Most Lowcountry homes run $1,800 to $4,500 for seamless 6-inch gutters and downspouts. Guards add roughly $8 to $12 a foot.
Do I need 6-inch gutters?
On the coast, yes. Rainfall intensity here overwhelms 5-inch gutters on most roof pitches.
Do guards actually work with live oaks?
Micro-mesh does. Foam and brush inserts do not. We only install the mesh.
Can you install gutters without a new roof?
Yes. Gutters are a standalone job in one day.
What colors are available?
Over 20 standard colors to match trim or fascia.
