Gutters in Kiawah Island

Kiawah gutters clog from the canopy on one street and corrode from the ocean on the next. Under the oaks and pines in Turtle Point, Osprey Point and Vanderhorst, live oak leaves, pine straw and palmetto fronds pack gutters year-round, so we install 6-inch seamless aluminum and recommend micro-mesh guards. On the Ocean Park and Cassique oceanfront, standard steel hangers pit and stain in salt air, so stainless hangers and marine-grade fasteners replace them.

Gutter color and profile go into the same Architectural Review Board package as the roof, matched to the roof color. On an elevated oceanfront or marsh-front house, a downspout that ends at the piling line dumps water onto the parking pad and storage under the house, so we run the downspouts to grade and away from the pilings.

On Kiawah the gutter is a design element as much as a drain. Matte bronze or dark aluminum in a profile that matches the fascia disappears against a stained-wood Turtle Point or Osprey Point house, which is what the ARB is looking for, and a bright white K-style gutter on that house is the kind of thing the Board sends back. We submit the gutter profile and color with the roof package so the review happens once.

For a Kiawah rental, gutters are maintained by someone who is not the owner. The install comes with a downspout map for the property manager and the ground crew, a note of which corners fill with fronds first, and a camera check of the troughs after the summer season so the owner sees the gutters clear before the winter rains. Nothing about that costs extra; it is how a gutter on an absentee house stays working.
