Rooftop decks and crow's nests on the elevated houses shed water onto the main roof below them, and that concentrated stream is what tears up shingle and overwhelms a gutter at one corner. Part of a Folly gutter job is a diverter or a scupper on the upper deck that spreads the discharge, done while the roof crew is on the house, so the gutter below is handling rain and not a waterfall.
